snow day

the weather redeemed itself today by being totally awesome. the city was the perfect temperature for being covered in snow and the kids were out in full force to make the most of the sledding haven that central park became today. i normally find it a little difficult to take interesting pictures of the snow because it's all just so...white...but fortunately there was plenty of color running around to contrast it.

grandfather lamp

what was meant to be a blog documenting this big bustling city has quickly become a collection of pictures of my apartment thanks to the relentless winter weather. if it's not bitterly cold out there's a "snowthunder" storm going. in case you can't tell, this is actually a reflection in our framed poster hanging on the wall.

cup and saucer

it was another beautiful january day in new york city so i was forced to get artsy indoors. not only is cup and saucer the name of a famous and beloved rock formation, but it is what's in these two pictures.

twinkle lights on

i didn't leave the apartment today because it was a high of 20 degrees and don't find my commitment to this high enough to subject myself to those bitter temperatures. but then as i was in bed reading by twinkle light (the modern day equivalent of reading by candle light) i decided i didn't really want to skip a day of updating for my many, many loyal followers so i snapped away a bit in my room. these are two pictures i find interesting.

tournament of champions-grand central station

today i headed over to grand central station to watch 2 first round matches of the 14th annual tournament of champions. i don't quite know why, but i like this picture better in black and white. maybe it's because grand central station is so old and romantic.

bright lights big city

what would a photo blog of new york city be without a few shots of time square? i had a networking meeting in the neighborhood so i figured i might as well swing by afterwards! that little kid was trying to get his dad to catch something on camera but he never did make it...i feel like a creep for taking their picture but it was too cute not to.

chi-lit-ho

chinatown, little italy, and soho all merge downtown into one little cultural microcosm of fish/produce markets, cheese & wine shops, and trendy boutiques. i took the subway to grand street and it smelled like fish the second i stepped off the train. i meandered down the streets until my hands got too cold and i had to put my gloves back on. i couldn't pick just one picture.  i'm sure this will be the case on many days...

rainy day chicken noodle soup

as predicted in my inaugural post yesterday, the winter weather may keep me from photographing the outside world on some days. today's "wintry mix" of snow and rain didn't stop me from leaving the nest, but i didn't think it wise to whip my camera out and wander around the city with it. so instead i tried this recipe for homemade chicken noodle soup from the cookbook big sis gave me for christmas, "what to cook and how to cook it." it was delicious!

lexington avenue-53rd street station and the lipstick building

midtown manhattan is not necessarily known for its character, but living here i have come to appreciate the huge office buildings that contribute to the city's famous skyline. it seems most people become jaded by their presence and we never really think about what feats of engineering and artwork they really are. i walk past the famed (in part because it housed mr. ponzi scheme himself, bernie madoff) lipstick building every day and always notice the way the other buildings reflect off its windows. i had a feeling it could make for an interesting photograph. the first picture is the inside of "my" subway station, just beneath the ground this building stands on. normally i wouldn't have stopped to appreciate the mosaic that adorns the walls but i had a little time to spare today...

willkommen!

welcome whoever you may be! before we begin allow me to explain how this blog came to exist. i live in manhattan but am currently unemployed. in an effort to get me out of my midtown apartment in between my daily activities of applying to jobs and going to the gym, but to not spend any money (other than on transport) while i'm out there, i have decided to take my trusty canon rebel T1i all over town and post a picture a day to this very blog. it's the dead of winter so it may be hard to keep up every day (and who knows how long i'll be unemployed for...) but i'm going to try my best. the name is a combination of mine and my 2 sisters' middle names. it's a small homage to our, along with our mother's (where these family names come from), shared love of photography. i also realize it could easily be the actual name of some very distant cousin of mine, so if you're out there i hope you don't mind i used you as my namesake!

let the picture taking begin! i hope you enjoy
